There are those diners who will know the meaning of the phrase “the purple mist appears in the east,” and there are those who will be intrigued enough to want to find out. If you’re in either of those categories, you are likely to be eating up, in every sense, still another new and happily authentic Chinese eatery that’s been added to the impressive lineup of restaurants on the Delmar Loop.
Open since late May, Noodle Story (6315 Delmar) is two stories of beautiful vintage St. Louis brick architecture. Obviously, a boatload of money’s been spent thoroughly decorating the interior. There are dark wood beams, ornate parquetry screens, and careful, subdued lighting—it’s among the most pleasant, tasteful restaurants on the scene right now. The combination of unpainted wood and brick walls are refreshingly tasteful. A billboard-size reproduction of the Song Dynasty’s most famous painting, Along the River During the Qingming Festival, dominates the second-floor dining area and serves as a reminder that restaurant art does not have to be awful.

Old and new. The same can be said for an early 20th century building on the Loop that’s now home to a wonderful new dining experience.
